Intersections Across the Gulf:
The Art and Science of Illumination through the Tapestry of Light
EXHIBITION: CONVERGENCE | Transforming Our Future - May 3-24, 2013
RMIT Design Research Hub
The installation ‘Intersections Across the Gulf’ in the Convergence exhibition at the new Design Research Hub included a new columnar ‘light drawing’ by Irene Barberis and an exposition of new and fine materials being used in the Tapestry of Light Project, including multiple fibres from the Tasara Centre, photonic and fluorescent threads, luminescent filaments and Apocalypse posters.
Manuscripts and tapestries, viewed by way of reflected light and stained glass seen by the intensity of transmitted sun light, rely to different degrees on the brilliance of their pigments – qualities which have changed in the contemporary era to scientific concepts of hue, saturation and intensity.
In this study, we explore the art and science of light from the viewpoint of collaboration between a practicing artist with an interest in systems and in interpreting the history of art illumination in a contemporary context, and a practicing scientist
interested in photonic materials and systems. Einstein clearly establishes “mystery as the common origin of both true art and true science”, while the German philosopher Karl Kraus notes “Science is spectral analysis. Art is light synthesis”. Here, this link between art and science is explored in a modern synthesis of early tapestry, as well as re-interpretations of the photonic activity expressed at the scale of the new nanotechnologies that underlie recent advances in what is possible. Hence the Tapestry of Light becomes The Art and Science of Lux, Lumen, Illumination and the Photon.
2014 will see the development of twelve major light tapestries, woven through workshops in Southern India, expanding the international focus and intercultural potentials of the project with further exhibitions across Australia, United Kingdom, Middle East and the USA.
The Tapestry of Light Projects team : Dr Irene Barberis (Artist and Project team leader RMIT), Professor David Mainwaring (Scientist, Swinburne University), Emeritus Professor Michelle. P. Brown ( Curator, Historian and Writer), Professor Bernard Muir ( Medievalist, Director, Evellum, Melbourne University, Newman College) with Paul Beckett and PhD students (Electrical engineers, RMIT).

BLACKARTPROJECTS
ONE HUNDRED
100 is a project that challenges the notion of ‘drawing’ by means of presenting an exhibition of works that engage the act of drawing in relation to facets of perception, process and the capacity for individual invention.
