Winter Lecture Series: Is now all there is?
Presented by Dr Sophia Errey
Talk and discussions, Saturdays 2 – 3 pm
Do we too easily assume that our current concepts of space, time and materiality are definitive for making and viewing art?
By exploring even a fraction of the ways in which other times and cultures have given expression to these concepts through their art practice we can expand the boundaries of our engagement with the still present past.
Here are some of the areas we will touch on
July 12th Body
Representing human bodies is fundamental to Western art practice, but how do changes in understanding affect art? Looking, being looked at, material and spiritual bodies, naked and nude – all issues of intense debate in understanding images.
July 19th Space
The body in space – perspective and vision. The space of the world: mapping and heavenly bodies. What are some of the conventions for reading spatial relationships in Western and non-Western cultures? Is perspective an agent of rationalist coercion?
July 26th Time
How can time be represented? How do different conceptions of time affect narrative conventions?
August 2nd Space, time and body in the 24/7 regime
Crary’s chilling 24/7 discusses some of the consequences of 21st century reconfiguration of space/time and its impact on the body. How do understandings of contemporary art align with these changes? Does the image have a future?
Venue: Langford120, 120 Langford St. North Melbourne
Cost: $25 per session, payable on the day
